When Sir Taegen Harris, known to the world as Love Spells, first started making music, it was more out of necessity than anything else. 

“I think I was doing it because I needed to, or else I’d go crazy.”

Homeless for a time, Love Spells never stopped thinking about music, and at just 21 years old, he’s already passioned beyond years. But the emotional depth his songs are charged with create an image that isn’t entirely accurate at the moment. 

“I’m not as sad as I was when I first moved to LA, so I don’t express that as much. I prefer the upbeat stuff right now.”

And that’s the thing when singing about love. It doesn’t need to be one way or the other, sad or cheerful. It’s a complex emotion, and as Love Spells grows, he continues to uncover new ends of the spectrum. Long story short, Love Spells isn’t as sad as you think he is.

With growing buzz following collab projects such as Pigeons & Planes presents: See You Next Year 2 (2024) and Blush (2025), Love Spells began to make a name for himself with his raw ballads, soaked in reverb and tender yearning. 

Love is inexplicable, and more than just a feeling, too. For Love Spells, it’s the law. His new album, LOVE IS THE LAW, finds its way to us July 24th via RCA records, followed by a 30-stop tour from July to October that will see Love Spells live in Europe for the first time. When I ask what it means to deliver to a global audience, he gives a layered response.

“I feel like we don’t have enough worldly songs and messages right now, you know? If you’re somebody like Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, you’re not niche anymore. You’re a global pop star. What do you have to say to people? What is your worldly message that people are going to come together on, and feel deeply to the point of emotion being evoked. It’s not the time to be personal. Not everything is about you.”

This ideal is what LOVE IS THE LAW is built on. It’s a global declaration, putting love front and center. Love Spells wants his music and message out to the world.

“The message is the title of the album. Me asking myself, ‘What do I have to say that people will give a shit about?’ I feel like, you don’t need to be famous if you don’t have anything to say. I wanted to make an album of my life at the moment. I’ve been ‘Love Spells’ for a while, but I never truly realized that Love is the Law until this point in my life.”

His experiences bleed into his music. I ask if he has a favorite heartbreak in his life.

“I do, and it still affects me to this day. I realize how much that stuff genuinely drives you crazy. I think it’s going to stick with me the rest of my life. Frankly, I don’t have a problem with that. I actually think it’s good. I’d rather not forget about how I feel about it. When you find that love it’s like something you end up chasing your entire life after that.”

Love Spells’ music perspirates that feeling. Heavily influenced by his hometown of Houston, Texas, LOVE IS THE LAW fuses gentle twang with soft-pop elegance.

“Even the guitar has a Western feel. I think I was just missing home. I did the whole Blush thing of me rapping and stuff, I got to express that rap side of Houston that I love so much. I love country music so much, and I never get to express that enough in music, so I’m like, let me do that here. Expand on that Texas pop sound.”

Blush, a 2025 collab album from Kevin Abstract and friends, was a departure from everything Love Spells was familiar with, but created a lifelong friendship with Kevin Abstract (or Ian Simpson), who’s played a huge role in his rise. 

“Ian just hit me up. He was like ‘Your music’s fire. Come work!’ We started that same night. I ended up packing a bag the next day and stayed for eight months. It was a very special time in my life. The fact we’re still so close now, that means something to me. It was more than just a one-off thing.”

Abstract’s influence on Love Spells goes beyond his songs, it seeps into his performances. I ask him what it’s been like learning from Kevin.

“He reminds me to do the most, all the time. An artist with traction is like a horse with wings, a Unicorn, you know? You are an anomaly, and you actually have all the justification and cause to do the most. It’s almost like you’re clipping your wings and deciding to be a normal horse when you’re just doing the bare minimum.”

In LOVE IS THE LAW, Love Spells’ personality is on full display, and it’s entirely his own. Not one of the album’s 12 songs includes a feature. He makes it clear that’s on purpose.

“I didn’t want to use any other name or artist as a crutch to introduce people to my own world. It would have kind of defeated the whole purpose of a debut album. If I’m introducing people to my world, why do I need anybody else on the songs? It’s me.”

These very feelings make their way into his music. The second track on the album, fittingly titled “Crutch,” sees Love Spells reflect on the topic of being someone easy to fall back into. The music video shows a glimpse into his theatrics. In what feels like an elevated mating dance; Spells flexes his muscles, spinning and swooning around an empty dance studio, giving a sensual and unrestrained performance. It’s enchanting and confident, full of cinematic grandeur. It’s also him at his most authentic.

“I love being theatrical… being crazy. That’s kind of my whole thing. The videos are just as important as my swag and my music.”

In everything that Love Spells does, dance plays a vital role. He thanks his Houston roots for that.

“I started going to Numbers nightclub every Friday. They played ‘80s new wave, I thought, ‘This is a whole different level of freedom. Everyone’s just here dancing together. This music is sick, I get to be dramatic and crazy. This is real community and love.’ And it’s that community and love that I took and ran with.”

Love Spells’ music is for the romantics. For heartbreak and yearning, for growth and rebirth. You’ve surely felt a sliver of what he’s singing about in any given song. 

Love Spells chose to push the boundaries of his world in search of a universal connection. In doing so, he found a place where LOVE IS THE LAW, and it needs no introduction.
